The Retreat: A Case Study
The Retreat is a bustling "style bar" located in a conservation area in the centre of a busy market town. Covering an area of c. 2300 sq ft the bar is open six days a week offering food and beverages.

The owner made the decision to install edd:e in the belief that by measuring The Retreat's electricity consumption by individual electrical circuit he would be able to identify consumption costs and trends by location, time and specific equipment or uses e.g. lighting.

Using the real time data which is remotely accessed via an internet connection the owner is able to monitor consumption patterns relating to lighting, cellar services, catering equipment, chiller units and assorted appliances.

edd:e on screen reports generate continuously updated graphical displays of energy consumption together with trend analysis to enable a better understanding of the consumption habits and identify ways to reduce energy use.

The Retreat management has been able to identify a number of changes that have resulted in significant electricity savings. Specifically;
  • 50% saving on electricity consumption in the cellar. This was achieved by reviewing the edd:e data which led to a change in the position of key equipment and the installation of a dividing door to ensure more consistent temperatures
  • The creation of an energy efficient outdoor garden area via the installation of LED lights and timer switches
  • A better understanding of the power consumption linked to the glass fronted drinks chiller units behind the bar. This led to changes to the configuration and timers were installed when it was discovered less energy was used to re-chill the drinks each day versus maintaining them at a constant temperature, all day, every day.
Commenting on edd:e, The Retreat owner, Ian Morrison said:

"edd:e is unobtrusive requiring no hard wiring and was quickly and efficiently installed without disrupting my daily business. More importantly, it has highlighted the energy saving opportunities in The Retreat which has led to significant cost benefits. I expect to save 27% on my current electricity usage"
